Spatiality Already in considering sensation we have broached the problem of space. That is, we have noticed that colors and textures cannot show themselves otherwise than to a body capable of exploratory movements. ’ It is thus because my body is in a certain ‘situation’ with respect to the perceived that there can be perception at all. This inescapable situatedness of our bodies implies a sense of spatiality that is at odds with our inclination to think of space as a container within which objects are arrayed—each at a certain fixed and measurable distance from all of the others.

The important thing, again, is to recall that human perceivers are situated in relation to the ground. ’ Gibson explains that “by layout, I mean the relations of surfaces to the ground and to one another, their arrangement. The layout includes both places and objects, together with other features. ”64 Earlier I said that, according to Gibson, we initially perceive the surfaces of our environment in terms of what those surfaces afford. But this is just to say that, in perceiving those surfaces, we do not merely perceive the surfaces: we perceive the reachability of affor‑ dances, their graspability and their heft; we perceive the partial occlusion of affordances by other affordances; and we perceive the power of moving, reaching and grasping that is vested in our own bodies.

27 The two positions to which the thesis of situated cognition opposes itself are clearly not unrelated: they both hold that the subject is, or is reducible to, some kind of entity that can be made an object of scientific or reflective inquiry (either to be elucidated or to be explained away), whereas the challengers insist that subjectivity reveals itself first and foremost in the ‘manners of givenness’ whereby a world appears to an engaged, outwardly‑directed, living being. This challenge has provoked a number of worries.
