Expansion of the cell’s receptive field outside of the area of immediate injury will contribute to the formation of secondary hyperalgesia (80–84). That is, non-injured tissue contiguous with the primary site of injury will develop increased sensitivity to stimuli. In addition to field expansion, some dorsal horn neurons, particularly those driven by skeletal muscle afferent fibers, can develop new and, in some cases, non-contiguous receptive fields. Irritation of the non-contiguous receptor fields results in the sensation of pain in the area of primary and secondary hyperalgesia (14,85).
