When Alexander the Great conquered the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire from India to Asia Minor and Egypt, founding the Egyptian city of Alexandria in 332 BCE, the scientific teachings of Aristotle spread.

The theory of impetus, a classic ad hoc explanation, was a bridge between medieval theories and the modern theory of inertia. Medieval mechanics was an integral part of medieval cosmology. In medieval cosmology, the earthly domain was cut off from the celestial, or spiritual, domain by the four elements of earth, water, air, and fire, which covered the Earth in layered orbs, or spheres. The celestial orbs comprised a fifth element, something unchanging and eternal. There were ten celestial orbs, the outer one the empyrean heaven.
